Thursday, January 21, 2021 2:00 – 2:30 p.m. (ET)

This 30-minute webinar is part of the Construction R&D Showcase series.
It is jointly presented by
Cognit.ca and the Canadian Construction Association.

Visual inspection of roads and other infrastructure is a critical part of effective asset management. When done manually, it can be slow, costly and is subject to analyst biases and fatigue from the monotony of repeated inspections. Artificial Intelligence can be a game changer for visual inspection in the construction industry by making it faster, cheaper and more accurate. These techniques can also be integrated into drones to allow better inspection of spaces that are difficult for humans to reach.

This webinar will focus on the challenges and opportunities in using AI for visual inspections. It will also provide an example of a new AI technology that has emerged from university research and is currently being commercialized through a new start up company called Eye for Infrastructure.

Speaker

John Zelek is an Associate Professor and co-director of the VIP (Vision Image Processing) lab at the University of Waterloo. He is also a professional engineer in Ontario. Professor Zelek’s current main research interests include autonomous robotic mapping and localization, 3D scene understanding, man-made infrastructure assessment (e.g., roads, buildings, bridges), learning 3D models from single-views, and biomechanical understanding of play & ability from video feeds. Some of these projects make use of AI and deep learning techniques.
